Influence of the Social Support on the Persistence of Homelessness among Homeless People in Korea

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate an influence of the social support on the persistence of homelessness among homeless people in Korea. The authors designed three samples using a non-probability sampling technique, a purposive sampling basis, in each facility and on the street. Three categories of homeless populations in Seoul were surveyed through questionnaire 100 street dwellers around subway stations and downtown parks 100 homeless in ¢¥The House of Freedom¢¥, an emergency shelter 110 homeless in 10 ¢¥Houses of Hope¢¥, Independent-Supportive Housing in Seoul. The obtained results were as follows ; 1. Experiences of social insurance benefits were negatively associated with a decline in the persistence of homelessness. 2. Increases in the levels of the social support from friends or family members of the homeless individuals were positively associated with a decline in the persistence of homelessness 3. Increases in the rates of the affiliation of the homeless individuals including supportive linkages were positively associated with a decline in the persistence of homelessness. Supportive linkages provided essential, expressive, and informational resources to homeless people.
